THE LITHIUM MARKET
-
The United States alone will need 500,000 metric tons per year of unrefined lithium by 2034 just to power EVs, but it currently accounts for only 1 percent of global lithium production.
-
The lithium market has been growing rapidly in recent years, driven by the increasing demand for rechargeable batteries used in electric vehicles, consumer electronics, and energy storage systems.
-
The global lithium market size was valued at $5.71 billion in 2020 and is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 14.6% from 2021 to 2028 (Grand View Research)
-
Lithium-ion batteries are the largest application segment for lithium, accounting for more than 50% of the global demand.
-
Overall, the lithium market is expected to continue growing in the coming years, driven by the increasing demand for electric vehicles and renewable energy storage systems.

DIRECT LITHIUM EXTRACTION
Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) is a set of technologies that extract lithium from brine resources more efficiently and with a lower environmental footprint compared to traditional evaporation pond methods. DLE utilizes various processes like adsorption, ion exchange, or membrane separation to directly capture lithium from the brine, eliminating the need for large, time-consuming evaporation ponds. This leads to:
-
Faster production: DLE significantly reduces lithium extraction time from months to weeks.
-
Higher efficiency: DLE boasts higher lithium recovery rates (up to 90%+) compared to traditional methods (40-60%).
-
Reduced environmental impact: DLE requires less land, conserves water, and minimizes the disturbance of ecosystems.
-
Access to untapped resources: DLE enables the extraction of lithium from lower-grade brines and previously inaccessible deposits.
While still under development and commercialization, DLE has the potential to revolutionize the lithium industry by providing a more sustainable and efficient way to meet the growing demand for this critical element in the energy transition.
SMACKOVER FORMATION
The Smackover Formation, spanning Arkansas and Texas, is emerging as a significant lithium resource due to its high-grade lithium brine. Companies like ExxonMobil, Equinor, Lanxess, Tetra, and Standard Lithium are actively involved in projects exploring Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) technology to extract lithium from the brine.

CARBON SEQUESTRATION
Barrell Energy Inc. is actively developing and seeking partners for four Carbon Sequestration projects in Louisiana and Texas.
Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) encompasses a series of processes aimed at reducing CO2 gas emissions. Here's a summary of carbon sequestration's role within the broader CCS framework:
-
Capture: CO2 is captured from industrial sources like power plants or directly from the air.
-
Transport: Captured CO2 is compressed and transported via pipelines, ships, or trucks to a suitable storage site.
-
Sequestration (Storage): This is where carbon sequestration plays its crucial role. CO2 is injected into deep geological formations like depleted oil and gas reservoirs, saline aquifers, or unmineable coal seams. Once injected, CO2 is trapped and stored securely for long periods, preventing its release into the atmosphere.
-
Monitoring and Verification: The storage site is monitored to ensure the CO2 remains safely contained and doesn't leak back into the atmosphere.
Sequestration's Importance in CCS:
-
Permanent Removal: Sequestration offers a long-term solution for reducing atmospheric CO2 levels. By safely storing CO2 underground, it effectively removes it from the carbon cycle.
-
Climate Change Mitigation: CCS, with sequestration as a key component, is recognized as a vital technology for mitigating climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
-
Industrial Decarbonization: CCS enables industries with high carbon emissions, such as power generation and manufacturing, to continue operating while significantly reducing their environmental impact.
